WHY WAS THE CLUB STARTED?
Abiot Madiba started off doing Drug Awareness programmes at two high schools within his community. The children participating brought up many issues that required further intervention and funding was applied for in order to develop an 'Ubuntu Club' with the youth. These school children were faced with many situational and familial problems in their immediate environment.
KHULISA TRAINING INPUTS:
CLUB ACTIVITIES:
An Ubuntu Club was started and because of the high number of applicants it was then split into 3 different clubs each with their own Identity they were named Perseverance Youth Club, Rainbow Youth Club and Arise and Shine Youth Club. The youth were identified for the clubs and training commenced. The age group of the participants ranged from 16 to 20. There was only funding for one Ubuntu group and due to this there was no money for the leadership camp. Abiot approached the local municipality and was able to take all the participants on a camp with the local municipality adding the participants to one of their environmental camps. The programme was run after school at Kgapahmadi High School and Matlesaine High school.
DATE CLUB COMMENCED:
February 2009
TARGET:
It has been empirically proven that children who go on to become juvenile delinquents and then criminals have all had a history of some form of abuse. Peer pressure today is a reality and with the increase in gang culture these children need to form positive peer groups in order to refrain from joining delinquent peer groups. The target group was School going youth in two high Schools
IMPACT:
The impact of this particular programme was enormous; one of the students had been raped on a continual basis by one of the family members and had nowhere to turn. Through the support of the other participants and the facilitator she was able to overcome the trauma she had experienced so much so that she went on to speak publicly about her experience at the camp as well as at a rally held in Rustenburg. She has since become the voice for many sexually abused young girls in her community. She also spoke at a Conference held at UNISA. This young lady went on to complete her Grade 12 with distinction. Other members of the clubs admitted to using drugs and abusing alcohol and through this experience were able to turn their lives around and refrain from drug and alcohol consumption. This group became a family and to date are involved in continuing projects. After the community scan they have identified a crèche in a very poor community, they have since built a jungle gym and a building is soon to be erected in place of a tin shack. Rainbow group has also gone on to build from their 12 original members left at school to 60 members. They run an environmental group at school and in the local community teaching people about the need of the environment; they have cleaning campaigns and also run a drama and poetry group at their school. They have not only changed their lives but have touched many other pupils in their school and helped an entire community and future generation.
