WHY WAS THE CLUB STARTED?

In Hammanskraal there is an incredibly high unemployment rate amongst out of school youth due to lack of employment in this area. There is also a lack of positive recreational facilities within the communities as well. A group of motivated youth between the ages of 18-30 approached us wanting to start an Ubuntu Club as they had heard about the Ubuntu Club from other Ubuntu Club members. The funding was secured and training commenced, the participants gave their club the name of the Dream Catchers. These youth identified problems in their area including a high number of children addicted to drugs, high teenage pregnancy and high crime rates among youth offenders.

KHULISA TRAINING INPUTS:

CLUB ACTIVITIES:

An Ubuntu Club was started and the training was completed. The club went through the life skills training and did a community scan on possible implementable solutions. They identified that the high drug abuse rate amongst unemployed youths was creating high HIV rates, high teenage pregnancy and obviously the high crime rate. The group were then trained as Drug peer educators in order to be able to deliver informed drug awareness programmes within their communities and schools. The group then went for a 2 day workshop at SANCA to learn how to implement these awareness programmes within the educational environment, how to identify a drug user and how to refer to the relevant specialists.

DATE CLUB COMMENCED:

February 2009

TARGET:

It has been empirically proven that children who go on to become juvenile delinquents and then criminals have all had a history of some form of abuse. Peer pressure today is a reality and with the increase in gang culture these children need to form positive peer groups in order to refrain from joining delinquent peer groups. The target group was School going youth in two High Schools.

IMPACT:

The impact of this particular programme was measured by the continuation of the youth in the programme and by the knowledge they gained being experientially utilized. The group also identified a shelter for abused, abandoned and orphaned children where they volunteer to help whenever necessary. The group has also been helping with the School holiday programme and have started a team themselves within their area. This group is highly motivated and are making a substantial impact within their community as well as neighbouring communities. After being trained some of the participants were able to secure employment and some moved to other areas in order to take up employment, this is seen as a successful outcome as these youth are no longer unemployed.

WHAT SUPPORT WE NEED:

Staff Needs

We would like to further train this group in how to successfully run a small business which would then make them able to sustain themselves in order to continue their work in their communities.

Funding Needs

We would like to be able to create more Ubuntu Clubs in order to reach other schools with this programme. We would also like to be able to provide sewing machines in order for this group to make uniforms for child headed households. Computers if donated would enable them to open an internet cafe which would enable them to be sustainable.
